Some plants never go out of fashion in the UK. It seems Brits find something they love, try, and test it, and then stick with it. Not that we’re complaining, as the Dracaena fragrans is a great looking plant. Popular in Europe since the early 1800s, this tropical African evergreen found its way into UK and hasn’t left since.

Known to be slow growers in homes, their thick canes/stems over time produce long and narrow leaves, reminiscent to stalks of corn, growing upward in fields. This growth habit also makes them look a lot like palm trees, which is why they’re sometimes called “false palms.”

Because of their shape and size, they make ideal houseplants for smaller rooms, and as an added bonus are not high maintenance once you get their growing conditions right.
