One of the best-known houseplants, and not just because it’s put in everything from medicine supplies to soft drinks, the aloe vera has the ability to be a plant for any occasion.
The gel that grows inside this littles guys leaves is used for everything, from skincare products to cleaning items, health drinks to supplements. Some people even have them as houseplants! Never looking out of place on a windowsill or bookshelf, these slow growing beauties are a stemless succulent with thick, fleshy, grey-green leaves with serrated edges.
Native to Arabian Peninsula, the aloe vera also grows in parts of Spain, China, Mexico, Australia and hotter parts of the USA. Just think of it this way - if it looks like a western could have been shot there, then an aloe vera will happily sit there in the sun. When grown indoors in the UK, make sure there’s lots of light and not an overabundance of water. These are plants that love the heat and dry places, and will let you know very quickly if you’re doing something that upsets them
