In the UK we love our easy-care succulents. Often wrongfully mistaken as a ‘gateway’ plant for beginners, they’re actually an ideal addition to any collection as you always know what you’re getting, and they can sometimes produce incredible results with a little time and effort. The Euphorbia trigona, or the wonderfully named ‘African Milk Tree’ originates from West Africa and has a striking look unlike any other succulent.
Its nickname comes from the fact its stems contain milky sap, though don’t be tricked into thinking it’s like a traditional cactus - the sap is mildly toxic, so not a plant for pet owners. Each stem has 3-4 vertical ridges with pairs of reddish spines running down them, and lanceolate shaped leaves, also a reddish colour are fashioned in-between the spines from the ridge side. It’s very rare you can say a succulent is a statement piece, but the African Milk Tree is remarkable, as well as easy to care for. A real winner.
