Sedum Morganianum 'Burro' - Donkey Tail
A beautiful hanging houseplant that can be forgiving for beginners, and rewarding for experts
A member of the wider succulent family and native to Mexico and Honduras (and some parts of North America) you’ll be hard-pressed to work out why this wonderful looking hanging plant is nicknamed ‘Donkey’s tail’. Supposedly to some, it resembles the end of the animal’s tail, and to others bunny tails. We’re not entirely sure what Zoos these people are going to, but we love with kooky take on the hanging plant all the same.
In the wild of central America, the trails of this plant can flow as long as 60cm and sports pink and red starshaped flowers in the heat of the summer. It’s rare that this would happen in the UK, but its natural succulent shapes bring enough beauty on its own.
Popular and easy-to-grow, this hanging succulent has rows of fleshy, tear-drop shaped leaves that are considerably tougher than its similar looking ‘string of pearls’ brothers (though not that much, and you should avoid handling them when possible). All things considered, donkey's tail succulents are pretty easy to care for. Like nearly all succulents, they do well if left to get on with things on their own—if you forget to water them once or twice, they'll still be just fine.
